Nina's Tree-house refers to the workshop, design and construction of a wood-oriented project in Rotterdam's one and only beach in the old ( but historically and socially significant) Quarantine Quarter , south of the Maas river's only green "island" between manufacturing and harbor industry facilities . It is a part of the city, that reminds you nothing at all like the rest of Rotterdam or even the rest of The Netherlands. In this piece of land where nature and art are the only priorities, took place the 10-day workshop, hosted by Camposaz, an Italian based organization who promotes "interaction between disciplines and practitioners dealing with architectural design while understanding the significance of the 1:1 scale".

Only 12 applicants were selected from a total of 9 different countries to contribute in the project which eventually would be part of "In Quarantine: Contemporary Hermitages" exhibition. The participants' design intention, my and my 11 fellow colleagues, was to create a hermitage that enters into a dialogue with the surroundings. The only limitations - strict parameters - were not to create an occupiable platform above 4m high and that it must have the ability to pass inspection as a "semi-temporary structure".

The proposal was unanimously decided with the intention to blur the lines between natural and the built environment, engaging the earth, the plant life and the sky through the procession of space. The only spatial limitations where 3 trees that were left physically untouched but visually engaged leading to the design of a Y-shaped wooden "shell". While walking up through the different levels, one can experience integrated features such as swing, a 45 degrees bench, frames that capture certain views, a peace room and the last level- the belvedere, the platform that offers views over the Maas river and the big cargo ships.

The project was finished in the time scheduled, as the common language of ideas, design and implementations are transmitted regardless our place of origin to a beautifully made "idyllic place outside of our busy world".
